"I Can't See How What You’re Telling Me Could Be True"
"I can't see how what you’re telling me could be true."
I'm sure most people have heard one form of this statement or another. Where the person is expressing that they heard you, but can't seem to get to the place of agreeing with you. They are legit trying to understand and agree, but it won't compute with their view of how the universe works.
As that sentence finishes... zooming out from it, way out.
When you step back from the specific conversation and look at The Lord's creation you see this statement has been made literally millions, billions of times throughout history. Because it's a natural reaction that comes easily to humans. Change is difficult for all humans. And no matter how smart or knowledgeable we are, we understand far less than we understand. (yes I meant to type it that way)
This is why it takes time, ever generations, for humans to learn big things. Or to normalize big new perspectives about things.
Things like "video calls" just don't make sense to millions of older people, but two generations down from them video calls are "normal and easy".
If you've ever put someone born in the 1920's on their first ever video call it was likely you got an interesting reaction. They enjoyed the call, but you could tell it was like pure wizardry to be able to SEE someone on the other side of the country while talking to them. And their reaction is the normal default response that the majority of humans have to wildly different information or experiences.
"I can't see how that could be true"
or
"I don't understand how it's possible to do that"
Now you might be wondering where I am going with this.
Truth
When you just take a moment and look out the window. How simple and easy is it for us humans to reject the truth, just because it's different from what we have experienced and come to know through our lives? We do it all the time. If you look throughout history this is the norm, not the rarity. We reject truth... until we don't anymore.
When we step back from our own lives and opinions, and look at humankind over history. How many times have we been wrong, have we rejected the truth? Germs, architecture designs, flying, basic of physics, medicine, math, space travel, etc.
Humans have rejected truth as many times as there are stars in the sky. Humans have proven ourselves wrong more than we have proven ourselves right. Yet we continue to say and think the same things every single generation.
"I can't see how what you’re telling me could be true."
