Division Is Good? Division Is Bad?

Division Is Good? Division Is Bad?

Division Is Good? Division Is Bad?

The world in 2026 is groaning with division.

  • Left vs Right
  • Conservative vs Liberal
  • Blue vs Red
  • Freedom vs Security
  • Europe vs Russia
  • Racism vs Love
  • Men vs Women
  • Government vs Family
  • TikTok vs X
  • This denomination vs That denomination

The list goes on and on and on, forever. No joke, the list goes on forever.

Now for Christians we are called to unity under Christ. Which would naturally lead to the conclusion that division is bad, right?

But life is not that simple. As as a Gen X person I continue to learn more and more that nothing under the sun is ever as simple as I want it to be, or as simple as I previously thought it was.

The reality is division is both good and bad.

It's good that all the followers of Christ come together regardless of denomination. Because we are all under Jesus first and foremost. We can disagree about this or that. But we need to not be at each others throats with "You're wrong and I am right about ____!". We should not be divided.

But a the same time division is good.

We don't unite with sin, we don't unite with evil. We divide ourselves away from those things.

We divide ourselves away from people who promote themselves and their ideology over the perfection of The Lord.

We divide ourselves from those who abuse women, children and men to satiate their perverse lusts.

We divide ourselves from those who would take away freedom, even if it was in the name of security.

If you surf around the net you see people calling for unity. You see people calling for division. You see media pitting group A against group B. It's a mess.

But division is good.

But division is also bad.

As I have spent a growing number of years pondering this dilemma. Like we should not divide ourselves against "the other political party". But then you see some of the ideology of "the other political party" and you're like "wow, that's abusive and dangerous". (note I didn't mention which party, because both parties say and believe the same thing about their respective "other" party)

How do you reconcile desiring unity, while also seeing horrors from the "other side"?

The reality is you choose to both be united and promote division. Because as Christians we are called to live in the world but not become like the world. To unify and to hold division at the same time.

Two things can be true at the same timeUnity is goodDivision is good

We all need to stop with the simplistic language of "unity!" and "don't have the other group!".

Human nature is a messy complex thing. Especially when you merge millions of humans together in a country.

Choose

Choose precisely and communicate precisely who and where and when to unite

Choose precisely and communicate precisely who and where and when to be divided

The problem isn't "division". It's communication.
